YouOS – Truly bringing the desktop to the web

July 24th, 2006 · Coding & Web Development, Cool Geeky Stuff, Internet

YouOS Screenshot

Those guys from MIT have done it again. YouOS is an amazingly cool web OS that actually seems to work properly! Here’s what they say about it:

YouOS is a web operating system that lets you run diverse applications within a web browser. Small applications like sticky notes or clocks. Large applications like word processing, mp3 players, and instant messaging. Even better, it’s very easy to tweak an existing application or write your own.

A complete list of features can be found here. It’s really cool to see a bunch of guys outdoing the best of them in bringing out something that actually works in a short amount of time. Mad props to you guys!

10 Reasons Jobs Are For Suckers

July 22nd, 2006 · Business

Scene from office space
In what I find is an excellent summing up, Steve Pavlina gives 10 reasons why a permanent job is detrimental to your personal and financial well being & development:

Just for fun I recently asked Erin, “Now that the kids are in summer school, don’t you think it’s about time you went out and got yourself a job? I hate seeing you wallow in unemployment for so long.”

She smiled and said, “Wow. I have been unemployed a really long time. That’s weird… I like it!”

Neither of us have had jobs since the ’90s (my only job was in 1992), so we’ve been self-employed for quite a while. In our household it’s a running joke for one of us to say to the other, “Maybe you should get a job, derelict!”

It’s like the scene in The Three Stooges where Moe tells Curly to get a job, and Curly backs away, saying, “No, please… not that! Anything but that!”

It’s funny that when people reach a certain age, such as after graduating college, they assume it’s time to go out and get a job. But like many things the masses do, just because everyone does it doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. In fact, if you’re reasonably intelligent, getting a job is one of the worst things you can do to support yourself. There are far better ways to make a living than selling yourself into indentured servitude.

……………….

One of the greatest fears you’ll confront is that you may not have any real value to offer others. Maybe being an employee and getting paid by the hour is the best you can do. Maybe you just aren’t worth that much. That line of thinking is all just part of your conditioning. It’s absolute nonsense. As you begin to dump such brainwashing, you’ll soon recognize that you have the ability to provide enormous value to others and that people will gladly pay you for it. There’s only one thing that prevents you from seeing this truth — fear.

All you really need is the courage to be yourself. Your real value is rooted in who you are, not what you do. The only thing you need actually do is express your real self to the world. You’ve been told all sort of lies as to why you can’t do that. But you’ll never know true happiness and fulfillment until you summon the courage to do it anyway.

The next time someone says to you, “Get a job,” I suggest you reply as Curly did: ”No, please… not that! Anything but that!” Then poke him square in the eye.

You already know deep down that getting a job isn’t what you want. So don’t let anyone try to tell you otherwise. Learn to trust your inner wisdom, even if the whole world says you’re wrong and foolish for doing so. Years from now you’ll look back and realize it was one of the best decisions you ever made.

I could not agree more with this guy!

Space Invaders – Stop Animation Style

July 20th, 2006 · Humor, Video Games

Just a quick blurb to point out a video that’s been doing the rounds on the blogosphere. Some people with a LOT of free time and patience have filmed space invaders IRL with stop animation. Original can be found here. Cool to see but I don’t want to think how long it took them to make this ;)

Lebanon – Provoking Armageddon?

July 20th, 2006 · Middle East, Religion

ch6_pat_11_4 horsemen_small.jpg
Iraq The Model has written an interesting take on current events in Lebanon based on his observations in Iraq:

I went to a guy who knows quite a lot about this salvation war so to speak and asked him if the texts mention anything about the timing of the war and whether it’s supposed to begin before or after the rise of the Imam and the answer was “After” but he added that chaos and rampant violence in the region are supposed to be among the signs and that the main battle would be “lead by the Imam himself”.

The thing is that we can’t be sure that they are going to play by book because throughout the Islamic history rulers employed what people consider divine texts to remain in power and make people obey them; and they did this either by twisting the texts through slanted interpretations or by making up the text as in adding thousands of texts that were claimed to be the sayings of the prophet.
Here we’re most likely going to see a new maneuver and I expect that the “imminent” arrival of the Imam is going to be announced through the Mumahidoon (those who pave the way for the Imam) and that’s what Sadr and followers describe themselves and that’s the word they use for a title of their website. That’s if they didn’t claim they were receiving messages from the Imam via a messenger.

All previous wars between Israel and Arabs were of a pan-nationalist nature and used feelings of Arabism to push the people to war. Of course religion had a role too but now religion is going to push Arabism aside and be the dominant element in Iran’s planned war because of the failure of pan-nationalism to retain its influence in the region after a long history of failures.
Iran’s dreams in exporting the Islamic revolution were stopped by the once strong pan-nationalism in last quarter of the 20th century but today we’re facing a renewed project of exporting the Islamic revolution in an attempt to fill-and taking advantage of-the vacuum left by the fading pan Arab nationalism…
And with liberalism still not strong enough to face such a challenge, I think the future of the region is in big danger.

It’s opinions like this that only people who live in the region pick up on and western journalists rarely percieve. As always, nicely done Iraq The Model!

Photo’s from the front line (Lebanon)

July 19th, 2006 · Middle East

Burt corpse in Beirout Harbour

In a disturbing series some guy has posted pictures he’s taken in Lebanon that show the horror of what’s happening. Quite disgusting what the world is allowing Israel to do. More info on the pictures can be found here:

Last night , 60 raids were executed all over Lebanon , from Tripoli in the north to Baalback in the East ,and in Beirut. Since Thursday 197 civilians were killed and 35o injured according to the health ministry , but this can not be a finel account since whole villages and cities are completely cut off , there’ s no way to reach them or know wht’s happening there. Now what happened in the south last night seems to be outrageous . People are fleeing in masses , there are humongous traffic jams in Saida , caused by hundreds of people fleeing to Beirut through the South.

The pictures speak for themselves….

Apple Macbook vs. Dell Latitude (temperature wise)

Apple Macbook vs. Dell Latitude

After a long break I’ve decided to start posting again to the blog :) . To start it off here’s a cool (but boring) article on how the Apple Macbook fares against the latest dell Latitude. The choice given to this seing as I’m planning on getting a Macbook REAL soon ;) :

In the end, it appears to be that, in certain spots, the MacBook is significantly hotter than the Dell, but its average temperature is very close to that of the Dell. Take this information as you will. I ensure you that both laptops were checked with the upmost scruitiny. In my opinion, I think that the MacBook is a great alternative to the PC dominated computer market. It does run a little bit hotter than the dell, but I remind you that the MacBook lacks cooling fans that are built into the Dell.

The 500 DVD Server

March 22nd, 2006 · Cool Geeky Stuff, Mobiles & Gadgets, Movies

5 TB Home Server!

In an endeavor that I’m sure will make many a geek salivate with pure lust, this guy has built a 5 terrabyte media server for his home setup;

“I built a 5-terabyte media server with 20 250GB hard drives–it uses a pair of 500-watt power supplies and has 12 fans running full blast to keep cool. It stores more than 500 of my DVDs, categorized by title, director etc., which it streams to my home-theater PC over a gigabit Ethernet connection.”

To the guy who did this, Respect! It just shows that you should do something well or not at all ;-)

Dude Builds Ultimate Home Theatre

March 22nd, 2006 · Mobiles & Gadgets, Movies

Some guy who obviously has a lot of free time and a lot of money to spend has built the ultimate Home Theatre:

Ultimate home theatre chairs

The theater is 16′ tall at the front (slab to concrete ceiling), and 11 1/2′ tall at the back. About 21′ wide and 29′ long. This was an addition to the house – we basically dug this huge hole in our front lawn and partially into the driveway, while also gutting a study on the main floor. From the main floor, you have steps down to the basement where you see a sitting area where the marquee is and thenonto a concession area and theater. So the superstructure of the theater is a 12″ to 18″ complete concrete shell

Nice indeed. Make my own humble home cinema setup look like crap…..
